Way Back When-sday
The picture at top is of a traditional Southern covered dish gathering at the Walker homestead -- my Mammy's family -- just outside of Roxboro, N.C. The Walker house is the big house in the background. The smaller home to the right is the one Mammy and Granddaddy built after they got married. That's where my Mama was raised. Mama is the little girl in the front center in the top picture. In the picture to the right, Mama is standing to the rear of her grandfather -- Pappy Walker -- while Uncle Tony (her brother) sits in front. Notice his roller skates. They are sitting on the side porch of the Walker home. I'm guessing both of these would have had to have been taken in the late 1940s or very early 1950s.
I think Mama's mama -- my Mammy -- is the person in the center in the top photo wearing the light-colored outfit on the other side of the table. And it could be Granddaddy that's walking toward her. I'll let Mama correct me if I'm wrong. These kind of family gatherings continue to be a strong tradition in our family.
