Way Back When-sday
This last box of photos I borrowed from my parents doesn't have very many photos with Russell or Brandon in them. I did find this posed photo with all four of us in it. Starting at left going clockwise (and agewise) it's me, Stephen, Russell and Brandon. I love Russell's striped coat. As for my plaid jacket, it reminds me of the fourth grade. That's when Mama and Daddy sent me to Bethel Christian Academy in Kinston, N.C., for one year (mistake) and I had to ride a van with some older kids.
Before school started for the year, Mama had taken me to the Sears Husky section -- click to enlarge the photo at right and check out the bottom part of the catalog page -- and bought me some checkered pants. When I got on the van wearing those pants, the older kids started calling me Chubby Checker. It was the first time I felt self-conscious about my weight. That was 30 years ago and I can still feel the burning in my face even as I tried to smile and tried to keep the tears from welling up large enough that one would be forced to roll down my face.
By the way, that's not me in the Sears underwear ad, just in case you were wondering.

That's the cutest story I ever heard. Those kids were just jealous! They were likely hungry and wearing their sister's hand-me-down underwear underneath their tough skins.
Ha!!!! Thanks for making me laugh about it, Schnecker. I feel better now.
I've come to claim my son with the red blazer...
Toughskins rule...
Oh my god! Checkered pants and Toughskins. I just flashbacked to my preteens.
Back to my comment that never got published...does anyone else notice how those boys always like to be in underwear...
Black Dress Video, Indians, sitting outside with helmets on...I could go on and on...but I love them all!
