Way Back When-sday

When Mama saw this picture of Mammy (above) with the mama-dog and a bunch of puppies she told me the dogs were called "fice." I couldn't find that as a breed but I did find the definition of the word and it goes back to southern roots:

Fice \Fice\, n.
A small dog; -- written also fise, fyce, fiste, etc.
[Southern U.S.] Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Being as it was in North Carolina around 1960, it makes perfect sense they called these dogs fice. They look a bit like Jack Russells without the short tail. The other picture above is of Mammy in her Easter best with the dogs running around behind her.

This last picture is of Mammy and Mama in their Easter outfits -- including hats, flowers and gloves. Easter is a big deal in Southern churches. Why do you think there's no NASCAR Nextel Cup races on Easter Sunday.

Old pictures are so fun! My bf is from Georgia so I'll ask him about "fice"

If he's a Georgia country boy, ask him to ask some older relatives if they called small dogs Fice ... Thanks.
